The True Meaning of Labor Day

All wealth is the product of labor ~John LockeWhile running for those HUGE “Holiday Sales” or going on that last trip of the summer, take a moment to reflect on the holiday that makes this possible.

It is great to have that one last celebration before the summer ends. A last barbeque before the kids go back to school or just getting together to watch a game. However, we should not forget the original Labor Day meaning.

The True Labor Day Meaning

When this holiday was first proposed, it was to celebrate and honor the backbone of this country, the working class. Ron Ashkenas states, in Rethinking The Meaning of Labor Day (Forbes), "When Labor Day was originally proposed by the Central Labor Union of New York back in 1882, its real purpose was to serve as a tribute to the working class." He goes in in this article to discuss how in more recent years Labor Day has become more of one last "fling" before summer ends.

This does seem to be the case more often than not. However, I tend to think rather than forgetting the Labor Day meaning we should expand it. Our countries backbone is built on millions of men and woman who work hard every day often without thanks or consideration. They defend our country, drive our trucks, serve us food, farm the land, work in those factories and refineries, and so much more.  In fact, we have more people to honor today. Including, that poor sales clerk working so you can get those holiday deals.

A Thanks To All

Take some time today while celebrating and enjoying this last holiday of summer to thank those people that without them our country would be nothing. For me, I always think Alabama says it best:
There are people in this country who work hard every day
Not for fame or fortune do they strive
But the fruits of their labor are worth more than their pay
And it's time a few of them were recognized….
Hello America, Let me thank you for your time. Read more: Alabama - 40 Hour Week Lyrics | MetroLyrics
